What is the Antibiotic Crisis: The antibiotic crisis is the misuse and overuse of antibiotic medications. As early as 1945, Sir Alexander Fleming raised the alarm regarding antibiotic consumption when he alerted the “public will demand [the drug and]… then will begin an era… abuse.” Antibiotic resistance happens naturally, but misuse of antibiotics in humans and animals is accelerating the process. Despite warnings of overuse, antibiotics are overprescribed worldwide.

The mortality per 10,000 people due to AMR in Africa and Asia would be nearly twice that of the mortality in North America, Europe, and Australia by 2050.

What is Antibiotic Stewardship?: Antibiotic stewardship are actions and measure that are taken to improve how antibiotics are prescribed by clinicians and given to patients. Improving the measures that are taken to distribute antibiotics is critical to effectively treating infections and protect patients from unnecessary harm that can be inflicted by the overuse of antibiotics.
What we can do to help?: As individuals, doing research on the antibiotic crisis and what it's causes are can be our first steps into solving the antibiotic crisis.
